betterplace is a Berlin based startup with the simple vision to change to world and make it a better place. It is a platform / social network for mapping large and small aid projects with people who can and want to contribute.
The idea:
All over the world, in distant countries and in our own neighbourhoods, people are working hard to escape poverty and create a better future for themselves and their children.
If they were to step out of anonymity – show their face, tell their story, show initiative and say what they need – it becomes easier to support them in their goals. And thus experience directly the immediate change everybody can make in the world.
This is where betterplace comes in. People who want to better their lives or that of others, present themselves and their projects, in text and image, on betterplace.org. Here they meet people who contribute to the direct and effective realization of their projects by offering donations in money, kind, know-how, or time.
All sorts of projects are welcome and each project has specific needs, so potential supporters can search the site for projects that make sense to them to support. Projects can be filtered by various categories (Education, Health, Food Security & Agriculture, Environment & Protection of Natural Resources, Infrastructure & Economic Development, Human Rights & Good Governance, Culture & Sports) or by geographic location and each project has a detailed breakdown on what is needed and how much has been accomplished already.

Trust is the key issue here and betterplace tries to build a layer of trust by associating various roles for each project to people and by providing a network to communicate between everyone involved. The progress of projects is documented and supporters (i.e. everybody who contributed money, donations in kind or time) are being updated on what is going on.
