This list is based on counting the number of bookmarks of about 1,000 services from Germany we are aware of at the bookmarking service del.icio.us. While it is hard to find significant metrics for measuring the popularity of sites, it’s even harder to access reliable data for any metric for all sites. Going with del.icio.us is straightforward, but not necessarily an indicator for a large number of active users, traffic or economic potential.
Sites which are available in English do have a competitive advantage at del.icio.us compared to sites which are in German only. Sites which have been around for a while have an advantage compared to services which launched this year or a few weeks ago. A few of the most popular sites in this list are useful and focused but rather smallish tools which attracted a lot of bookmarks because they made it on del.icio.us’ hotlist. The list misses a few popular or interesting services, but overall the heuristics works fine.
On a sidenote: there must be some secret Kool-Aid construktiv GmbH is drinking since they have 5 services in the top 20 (websnapr, mypictr, pixer.us, popuri.us and their flagship Mister Wong.)

notfrom Austria, not Germany, but I think maptales should be in that list with it’s 85 bookmarks.December 9th, 2007 at 4:51 pm
haha, one “not” too many… kick the first one.
December 9th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
Using the number of bookmarks at del.icio.us as the one and only criteria for measuring the popularity of german sites seems kinda… hmm…
December 9th, 2007 at 5:12 pm
Ok, I’m going to have to point this out, because it already struck me the last time you posted this list.
What makes you believe that “fotolia.com” is a German startup? There is absolutely nothing which would indicate this. They’re headquarters are in New York, the European headquarters is in Paris and all three co-founders are French (http://blog.fotolia.com/us/fotolia/management/fotolia-management_.html).
So, unless I completely missed something, this is obviously a French startup based in the US.
December 9th, 2007 at 5:15 pm
Oh, and I agree with Dennis on the measurement criteria. Alexa and Compete.com as an indicator would probably better, albeit nowhere near perfect.
December 9th, 2007 at 5:15 pm
@Tom I didn’t include sites from Austria, there are a few which would rank pretty high actually (e.g. popurls (14776) or retrievr (5319))

@Chris thanks for pointing this out. I stumbled upon fotolia a long time ago and mistakenly assumed it was a German site and wrongly tagged it then. Jappy is the follow up.
December 9th, 2007 at 5:44 pm
Maybe that whole list should be thrown away and a new one with websites targetting german speaking people and with german content should be made. And I really don’t understand why to exclude Austria, Switzerland and the german speaking community in Belgium and Italy (and even that’s still incomplete…).

www.muvibee.com -> http://del.icio.us/search/?fr=del_icio_us&p=muvibee&type=all (480 bookmarks since Nov 21st) also has some German touch (hosting, mentionings, support) even though they still seem to hide.

Hi Markus,
thanks for this great post. I guess http://lifestrea.ms was not on your radar at the time of this writing. To be honest, I didn’t dare to think that we could even be in the Top 100 as we are private beta, invitation only, and just 4 weeks old.
But it’s true - we have bookmarks from 83 people on del.icio.us, which would make a remarkable 96th place…
Cheers,
Thomas

This is a good list. When will you actualize that list? Which criterias did you use to create that list? By the way, I don´t feel that pageflakes is the no.1 web2.0 site in Germany. Anyway, this is a nice list with lots of interesting informations and nice graphix.
